ARTIST STATEMENT:

These great little watercolor paintings I did when having art lessons with my son, Jake. He is going to be four years old soon and can't wait for the "Hot Wheels Trick Tracks." As I would play with him (when not having a lesson) I would study the little piles of toys. They were fantastic jumbles of shapes and colors. During a lesson I would pile a small handful of toys on the table and begin to work while describing what I was doing. Jake would work alongside on his own thing in the same medium.

These paintings that you see are very important to me. As the children grow their tastes change, these paintings are a beautiful representation of playtime with my son but also where he was during the time of the painting.

Two of the paintings that you see on this site are actually Jakes' work. They are untouched by me except to sign his name. One patron emailed me and said that his work looked like it was just like any other childs' and not to be considered as art. I do not agree, to me it is art because Jake says it is. But I understand the point of view. Much abstract work, I do not understand as well.

To me the paintings when framed, when set aside to BE framed, are art because the artist claimed it to be so. MY art, my involvement with his art is the production of the arts into a viable business format where he can then sell prints of his paintings. There are even products with his art available. Jake has his own website, www.JAKESARTSTUDIO.COM. Those things to me is where the arts need to go. We need to buy the art from artists so they can continue to live and produce more art for us. To make a business from art, IS an art.

So, you can hopefully see that the painting that you hang is not ALL of the art involved with the work. Actually the behind the scenes of the art is just as important. When combined these aspects elevate Jakes' work to my own level, even though he is just a toddler. The ability to make you see his work as art is also artistic, and the direction artists need to go if the world wants more art.
