MY INK BLOT SERIES
BY DG WILSON

ARTIST STATEMENT:
These Paintings are very precious to me.  I have been doing them for decades.  They started back in college.  At Pratt I had a full tuition scholarship and took 18 credits a semester, every semester.  The incredible work load from a major in Painting, a minor in Drawing AND another in Illustration required me to creatively combine class projects.
As a Junior in an advanced Illustration class I was given a project that would be judged by the Society of Illustrators.  The project was to "Illustrate a Phobia."  All others in the class chose things like fear of going out of the house, Agoraphobia; fear of Frogs and the like.  I chose to Illustrate, "FEAR OF BEING PSYCHOANALYZED."
With my illustrations I would tackle them like art.  The illustration was in the mind of the viewer all I wanted to do was to make them THINK of the things that I chose when they looked at my art.  This was difficult for the others to actually understand...but the professors did. To illustrate my project I invented a new way of creating Ink Blots that were NOT subjective like the good Dr. Rorschack, my Ink Blots forced everyone to see scary things.  I created the Monoprint in Printmaking class and used it for the Illustration.  I then went back into the Ink Blot and drew a little man in a suit screaming with the Ink Blot exploding from his mind.  It was a success.
As with most of my work I run into bad luck though.  My work was never entered into the contest, however, because the Intern that was to take slides of the submissions failed to even take slides of my work let alone submit them.
It is an interesting twist to my fate, one that kept me out of professional Illustration.
I have worked on this series off and on for a very long time.  The have gone from mostly ink to full color paintings.  There have even been some advances as I placed them on canvas and utilized a heavier brushstroke and thick paint.
The largest and longest series with these Ink Blots is my Portraits of God.  Out of these I made Limited Edition Prints from just four.  I took them and made a Game for the Ink Blots, well actually two games in one.
I do hope that you find enjoyment and introspection when you look at these paintings.  But nothing is like looking at the actual prints.  Also you will find that they actually work on the same principles as the good Doctors'.  These paintings READ the viewer just as much as they read the painting!  Further you can determine things about the people that look at your prints on the wall based upon what they see in the work!  These change in your perception over time, as you grow and change so does the appearance of the art.  Finally, different subjects are seen from different locations in the gallery!
Thank you,
